Youngstown Soul Jam bringing four R&B acts to Powers

Four R&B acts will play an early evening show at Powers Auditorium on June 14.

The lineup for the Youngstown Soul Jam features Russell Thompkins Jr. & The New Stylistics, The Manhattans featuring Gerald Alston, Harold Melvin’s Blue Notes and Mr. R&B Mark Williams.

Thompkins is the original lead singer of the Stylistics, whose Philly soul hits include “You Are Everything,” “Betcha by Golly, Wow,” “Break Up to Make Up” and “You Make Me Feel Brand New.”

Alston is the only living member of the Manhattans from its commercial peak in the ’70s, when it had top 10 R&B hits with “Kiss and Say Goodbye,” “Shining Star,” “There’s No Me Without You” and “One Life to Live.”

The current Blue Notes carry on the legacy of the vocal group fronted by Melvin, who died in 1997. Its hits include “If You Don’t Know Me by Now” and “The Love I Lost.” Williams’ music mixes contemporary hip hop/trap influences with old school R&B.

Tickets for the 6 p.m. show go on sale at 10 a.m. Monday at the DeYor Performing Arts Center box office and through Ticketmaster.

Starting at $3.23/week.
