Labras highlight indie Latin funk on ‘Be Cool’

Adrian, Cristian, David and Antonio Labra always have embraced their Hispanic heritage in the music they make as the Labra Brothers, but it’s always been one ingredient in their stew of influences.

The Hispanic influence is more of the main course on the new EP “Be Cool,” a three-song collection that will be released on Friday, followed by an EP release show Saturday at Westside Bowl in Youngstown.

“Until now our releases have been all over the place, partially because we were in the habit of recording whatever song was on the docket,” Adrian Labra said. “Whatever idea was brought to the table — let’s do it.

“We recognize that could be confusing to someone introduced to us for the first time. We wanted to do a better job of identifying the message we want to leave people with. We scrutinized the songs on the docket — Is this on brand for us? Does it make sense? We started to come up with something a little more cohesive.”

The title track, which was released in advance, has a slinky Latin rhythm and was a standout in the band’s live set opening for Red Wanting Blue last month at Westside Bowl. “Los Dias” isn’t the first Labras song to blend Spanish and English lyrics, but the Spanish is more prominent than ever before.

“‘Los Dias’ might be the first song that opens in Spanish,” Adrian said. “It’s always been there; it’s always been a part of us. Putting it out in the very front of the song, we didn’t mean for it to be a statement, but I think it kind of is one. … I think as we move into the direction of indie Latin funk, certainly in this area it sets us apart.”

Those harmonies created by Adrian, Cristian and David, prominently featured on the new song “Not Far from Home,” also add to the band’s distinctive sound.

“Those brotherly harmonies are one major point we want to get across,” Adrian said. “We want to get to the point where, when you hear one of our songs on The Summit (radio station) or somewhere else, you recognize it as the Labra Brothers.”

In addition to the four brothers, the band also features Matt Hayes on drums and Danny Svenson on keyboards. Svenson missed last month’s Westside Bowl show because his other band, Spirit of the Bear, was playing The Newport in Columbus that night. Spirit of the Bear signed a distribution deal with Shelter Music Group in 2021, but Svenson continues to work with both acts.

“He’s still very much a prominent and loved band mate,” Adrian said. “We try to respect the fact that Matt and Danny are both very active musicians playing in a lot of different projects and working in music to support themselves. … We record with Danny, and even if he’s not with us 100 percent on the road, it doesn’t change the fact he’s integral within our group and the recording process.”

Along with David’s saxophone, the Labras will have a trumpet player for Saturday’s concert, something Adrian’s wanted for a long time.

“I think it makes the show exponentially more powerful,” he said. “We’re trying to incorporate it more and more.”
