Packard bands play concerts for Valentine’s Day

W.D. Packard Concert Band ensembles have two Valentine’s Day-inspired performances planned before the holiday.

The Big Band Sound of Packard, led by Daniel Carioti, will provide the soundtrack for a Valentine’s dance from 7 to 9 p.m. today, and 3 p.m. Sunday, the full band is planning an afternoon of romantic music for its pre-Valentine’s Day concert.

Guest conductor Sunday will be Galen Karriker, director of bands and professor of music at the University of Akron. He conducts the UA Wind Symphony and Concert Band. He earned his bachelor’s degree in music education from Louisiana State University and his master’s degree and doctorate from Michigan State University.

Tania Grubbs, a Youngstown State University graduate, will be the featured vocalist Sunday on the standards “Stardust,” “Someone to Watch Over Me” and “Embraceable You” and will sing a medley of Irving Berlin songs backed by James Garber on piano.

Grubbs has performed with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, the Florida Philharmonic, the Boca Raton Pops Orchestra and other ensembles, and her most recent release is 2020’s “Live at Maureen’s Jazz Cellar” by the Tania Grubbs Quintet.

Other selections include John Philip Sousa’s “Bride Elect” march, Howard Hanson’s Symphony No. 2, Percy Aldridge Grainger’s theme from “Green Bushes,” selections from the musical “My Fair Lady,” Leroy Anderson’s “The Girl I Left Behind Me,” Tolchard Evans’ fantasy on “Lady of Spain” and Jacques Press’ “Wedding Dance.”

Both performances will be at Packard Music Hall, 1703 Mahoning Ave. NW, Warren. Admission is free, and funding is provided by the W.D. Packard trust.
