Gray Areas: Favorite returns to TAG

Assorted ramblings from the world of entertainment:

• “The Stars Around Us: Warren Is Out of This World” is the theme for this year’s Trumbull Art Gallery Summerfest.

Nearly 20 art classes and workshops will be offered June 27 to 30 at the downtown Warren gallery, and the festivities will culminate with a celebration from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 1 featuring a display of the work created that week, make-and-take art projects and free ice cream courtesy of AVI.

Several of the classes draw inspiration from the galactic kind of stars . Others are inspired by stars with Mahoning Valley roots.

For Grohl’s Guitars, students ages 8 to 10 can decorate their own rock star guitars like the ones played by Warren native Dave Grohl in the band Foo Fighters. Students 10 and older can create their own 3-D license plates in a class that draws on the legacy of Packard Motors or make a replica of a historic home while learning about the accomplishments of Warren’s Harriet Upton.

There are six classes for children ages 5 to 7, six classes for children ages 8 to 10 and seven for those ages 10 and older. Some meet for one session; others meet for as many as three sessions. Cost generally is $7 per class hour.

A complete class schedule and registration forms are available online at trumbullartgallery.com/summerfest. For more information, call 330-395-4876.

• The Vindys pulled out all the stops for its concert Saturday at the Youngstown Foundation Amphitheatre.

The Youngstown band didn’t have a new album to celebrate, like it did when it headlined the outdoor venue in 2021, but the band set the energy high with arena-ready anthem “Are You Ready?” to open the show, and the energy never waned.

Along with old favorites, there were a few musical surprises. The band covered Foo Fighters’ “The Pretender” as a tribute to drummer Taylor Hawkins, who died earlier this year. Lead singer Jackie Popovec dedicated the song to her father, with whom she was going to go see the Foos last month.

A few of the Labra Brothers joined The Vindys for the most unexpected one-two punch of the night — a slinky version of Selena’s “Bidi Bidi Bom Bom” that sequed into an epic instrumental jam on Santana’s “Soul Sacrifice” that continued while giant balloons were tossed out into the crowd.

• Since the Foo Fighters got a mention in the first two ramblings, I might as well make it a trifecta.

The band canceled its 2022 tour plans following Hawkins’ death, but on Wednesday the band announced two Taylor Hawkins Tribute Concerts.

According to the announcement the show will feature “his bandmates and his inspirations playing the songs that he fell in love with, and the ones he brought to life..” The lineup for those concerts and on-sale dates will be announced shortly.

Local fans will need a plane ticket and (in one case) a passport to catch the shows. Concerts are planned Sept. 3 at Wembley Stadium in England and Sept. 27 at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles. Hopefully, one of both of the shows will be livestreamed or available to see somehow.
