Newton Falls upends Jackson-Milton

NORTH JACKSON — Rematches sometimes have a different results and that was the case when Newton Falls traveled to North Jackson on Tuesday for a Division III playoff game with Jackson-Milton.

The Tigers avenged a regular season loss to Jackson-Milton with a 2-0 victory.

“We wanted Jackson-Milton,” Newton Falls junior Cameron Hunt said. “We had the option to face them. I talked with coach and we wanted them. We lost 1-0 to them in the regular season. We played great as a team today. We’ve lost a couple of games that we shouldn’t have, but I like where we’re at.”

Newton Falls (6-8-1) took advantage of the opportunity in front of them.

“We have a really young team,” Newton Falls coach Kassi Gant said. “It’s been a challenging year. Jackson-Milton beat us in the regular season. I picked this game, in particular, because I really wanted to win it. We were ready to rise to the occasion.”

The Tigers got off to a quick start with a goal from junior Jacob Sipka 13 minutes into the contest.

“We played pretty well,” Sipka said. “Especially after losing to them before. It was an important game. We have a lot to improve on, but we’re looking for another win.”

Sophomore Zach Stinson had a nice assist on the goal as Newton Falls worked the ball around in front of the net.

“It was a very clean game,” Stinson said. ” I think both teams had fun. We’ve done pretty well this year after losing six seniors.”

The Blue Jays’ (6-6-3) pair of seniors, Maddie Moore and Daniel Spalding, played their final game.

Aiden Cole had a couple of chances at getting Jackson-Milton on the scoreboard, but he was denied by Newton Falls goalie Mac Haidet, who made 14 saves.

Kylee Fetkovich continued to show a strong leg, and the Blue Jays were down to their third string goalie Brady Cole.

“This has been the best season in the six years we’ve been coaching here,” Jackson-Milton coach Craig Fetkovich said. “We had three more wins than our previous best. We posted seven shutouts. It’s been a roller coaster of a season with injuries and quarantines. It’s been impressive with only two seniors and two juniors on the roster.”

Hunt scored the second goal, on another assist from Stinson, with 18 minutes left in regulation.

The Tigers advance to play Independence on Saturday.
