Poland, Struthers, Chaney advance to Div. II districts

¯ POLAND 54, LAKEVIEW 29: POLAND — Andrew Centofanti scored 23 points and Ross Dedo netted 16 as Poland won the battle of the Bulldogs in a Division II sectional braket final.

The hosts led 20-10 at halftime and 40-25 after three quarters before pulling awayfor their third win against their Northeast-8 counterparts.

Nate Fox scored 15 points and Brandon Kilpatrick added nine for Lakeview.

¯ STRUTHERS 94, GENEVA 33: STRUTHERS — The host Wildcats made 15 3-pointers to outscore Geneva’s final points total.

Struthers led 33-10 after one period and 54-23 at halftime. Aidan Slocum and Ronnie Leonard scored 19 points apiece, Trey Metzka added 16 and Brandon Washington finished with 10.

¯ CARDINAL MOONEY 62, MINERAL RIDGE 41: YOUNGSTOWN — Michael Pelini poured in 26 points, Thomas Fire supplied 13 and Mick Hergenrother added 11 as the Cardinals downed the Rams in a Division III sectional bracket final.

Mooney led 33-19 at halftime and 49-29 entering the fourth quarter.

Triston Weiss and Jake Sylak scored 10 points apiece to lead Mineral Ridge.

¯ CHANEY 91, EDGEWOOD 43: YOUNGSTOWN — The Cowboys rolled to a big victory over Edgewood Friday to advance to the Division II Northeast District 2 semifinals.

Sharrod Taylor had a dominant performance for Chaney, finishing the night with 30 points. Josiah Gonzalez scored 15 points, Cameron Lawrence scored 12 and Clive Wilson added 11.

The Cowboys move to 9-6 on the season and advance to face West Branch.

¯ SPRINGFIELD 60, CAMPBELL 26: NEW MIDDLETOWN — The Tigers were led by Beau Brungard in a sectional bracket final victory over Campbell.

Brungard led the team with 14 points. RJ Smith scored 13 and Alex Rothwell added 10.

Campbell was led by Collin Michaels who scored 10 points.

The Tigers advance to play Champion on Tuesday.

¯ LOWELLVILLE 58, BROOKFIELD 37: LOWELLVILLE — The host Rockets limited the Warriors to 14 points in the first half and used a 19-10 scoring advantage to seal the outcome in the fourth period of a Division IV sectional bracket final.

Anthony Lucente netted 25 points and Cole Bjunofsky added 15 to lead Lowellville, which led 26-14 at halftime.

Donovan Pawlowski scored 14 points to lead Brookfield and Isaiah Jones added 12.

¯ VALLEY CHRISTIAN 77, WINDHAM 68: YOUNGSTOWN — The host Eagles made four of their nine 3-pointers in the final quarter to outscore the Bombers 23-12 after trailing 56-54 through three quarters in a Division IV sectional bracket final.

Sekou Stanley scored 25 points to lead four Eagles in double-digit scoring, as Jon’Trell Mixon tallied 13, Joe Battista 11 and Mark Revere 10. Zavion Howard added nine points for Valley Christian (15-4).

Windham got 28 points from Bert Jones, 16 from Chase Eye and 13 from Mikiylen Jones.

¯ WEST BRANCH 58, MARLINGTON 50: BELOIT — West Branch tied a school record for wins in a season set by last year’s team in a Division II sectional bracket final win over Marlington.

The Warriors picked up their 18th win of the season to advance to the district semifinals where they’ll take on Chaney. Dru DeShields led the team with 20 points. J.D. Brain scored 12 and Josh Gregory added 10.

¯ LOUISVILLE 75, SALEM 61: SALEM — Salem fell behind by 17 points in the first half, made a great comeback to pull within eight in the fourth quarter but Louisville countered the rally to hold onto the win in a sectional bracket final matchup.

Leading the Quakers was junior Jon Null with a team-high 19 points, while Drew Weir and Hunter Griffith added 15 and 11 points, respectively, despite both players missing time due to foul trouble in the game.

Salem finishes its season at 16-8 and shares a three-way chunk of the Eastern Buckeye Conference with Canton South and rival West Branch.

¯ NEWTON FALLS 55, LIBERTY 48: NEWTON FALLS — The roles were reversed in the third matchup between league rivals, as the Tigers built a big early lead in a Division III sectional bracket final and had to hold off the pesky Leopards.

Twice in MVAC-Gray league play, Liberty built big leads and the Tigers rallied for victories. In this one, Newton Falls led 28-10 late in the first half before Liberty closed the half with a 6-0 run. The Leopards eventually caught the hosts at 44-all, but Newton Falls closed with an 11-4 run.

Josh Honeycutt had 21 points and nine rebounds and Joey Kline had 13 points, 13 rebounds and seven assists for the Tigers (15-5), who will host Waterloo in a district semifinal on Tuesday.

James Davis scored 22 points and O’Marion Dawson added 17 for Liberty (10-9).

¯ JACKSON-MILTON 47, SEBRING 45: NORTH JACKSON — The Blue Jays put up 23 points in the final quarter to come back against Sebring in a sectional bracket final matchup. Mason Robison led the team, tallying 19 points. Nick McGinnis added nine points.

Matt Byrd paced the Trojans with 14 points.

The 11th-seeded Blue Jays take on Kennedy in the Northeast 2 District semifinals.
