Liberty pulls away, dominates LaBrae, 73-39

LEAVITTSBURG — The Liberty Leopards girls basketball team remained undefeated in the All-American Conference Blue Tier after dismantling LaBrae 73-39 on Wednesday. The victory gave the talented Leopards an 11-2 record overall, including a 4-0 mark in the conference.

“We started out pretty strong this year,” Liberty coach Deidre Watson said. “We’ve dropped a couple games. We’re just trying to perfect the things we need to perfect. We’re looking towards the postseason. We want to come out strong. We’ve suffered a couple injuries, so our bench is not the deepest. We’re trying to get some other girls to step up. Overall, we’re pleased with what we’re doing so far.”

Liberty dominated a LaBrae team that had lost just two games on the season by a combined five points. The Vikings fell to 8-3 and 2-2 in conference play. LaBrae was without leading scorer freshman Laura McCoy, who is recovering from a stress fracture in her foot and expected back soon.

“We did not come out ready to play,” LaBrae coach Mandy Rowe said. “We didn’t execute the way we wanted to. They made shots. We missed shots. We missed lay-up after lay-up. They finished their shots. We didn’t rebound very well. That was the difference in the game. We’ll all go back to the drawing board tomorrow, and get ready for Champion, and see what we can do.”

LaBrae junior Jenna Reppart’s 3-pointer was the Vikings’ only basket in the first quarter. Leopard senior Shar’Da Williamson scored seven of her game-high 21 points in the quarter, and Liberty led 14-3 after one.

“We played good defense,” Williamson said. “We boxed out and rebounded. We ran the floor and hustled. The defense won the game.”

After each team failed to score for several minutes, Liberty freshman Demi Watson’s shot from downtown and Reppart’s basket underneath made it 21-5 with 3 minutes left until halftime. The Leopards closed the half strong. Sophomore Allyson Jones (10 points) and Williamson hit a pair from long distance. Senior Nevaeh Dixon had a couple break-away lay-ups. Williamson’s lay-up at the buzzer gave Liberty a 35-7 lead at the break.

Viking junior Lenox Mc-Conaughey had a great ball fake in the post for a score, and senior Paige Wilson followed with a lay-in. Sophomore Gabby Figinsky never stopped hustling, but LaBrae was still down big.

Dixon had perfect shooting form on a deep 3-pointer late in the third. Figinsky took a hard fall and looked to be injured, but instead pounded the floor in frustration, and remained in the game.

Cianna Smith and Demi Watson both took it strong to the hoop helping give Liberty a 56-21 lead heading to the fourth.

LaBrae senior Mackenzie Wilson had a 3-pointer and sophomore Briley Daniels played tough as the Vikings outscored Liberty 18-17 in the fourth. Daniels and Reppart led LaBrae with 11 points apiece. Smith scored and followed with an assist to Demi Watson (15 points). Her sister, senior Delia Watson, scored 10 points. Williamson followed with back-to-back buckets.

“We wanted to come out starting fast with high intensity,” Deidre Watson said. “We put an emphasis on boxing out and getting rebounds. We didn’t want to give up second shots or clean looks. Defense wins games, and that’s what we try to instill in the girls.”
