Local fighters earn wins on amateur card

STRUTHERS — Charles Murray didn’t travel all the way from England just to settle for an easy victory on Saturday’s Struthers Fight Night 3 amateur boxing card at St. Nick’s Great Hall.

Marquan Calhoun also knew what he was up against in the main event when paired against local prospect Aiden St. Clair.

Calhoun, a Cleveland native, scored a unanimous decision over St. Clair of Burnside Boxing in their 185-pound scrap, while Murray’s impressive win over Julio Azpurua of Youngstown Golden String Boxing, also by unanimous decision, earned him “Fighter of the Night” laurels.

The fight of the night, however, could very easily have gone to Pittsburgh’s Kris Benjamin as he went toe-to-toe against Burnside’s Austin Gibson in a 140-pound matchup, before scoring a split decision over the local hopeful.

Loew-trained Omar Gardner got the night underway by scoring a unanimous decision over Detroit’s Essa Almanveri in a 95-pound scrap with Mason Johnston of Pittsburgh, followed by posting a split decision over Irving Cora of Lorain in a 109-pound tussle.

In the first of two 135-pound challenges, Pittsburgh’s Bryce Miller defeated Isaiah Christian of South Side Boxing Club after the referee stopped their contest in the third round, while Golden String Boxing’s Kavon Cotton authored a split-decision win over New Castle’s Alan Williams in the other 135-pound matchup.

Luke Sorek, of Dubois, Pennsylvania, was a winner by unanimous decision over Lorain’s Abdiel Hidalgo at 115 pounds. Laveer Pruit, of Detroit, posted a split decision win over Kevin Burns, of Golden String Boxing, at 145 pounds, while Anthony Zigarella, of Pittsburgh, won by unanimous decision over Murray’s twin brother, Henry, at 163 pounds.

The last result had Nicholas Jackson, of Ashtabula, posting a unanimous decision over Jordan Carr, of T-Black Boxing, in a 190-pound brawl.

The 12-bout amateur fight card featured local fighters from host Keith Burnside’s Boxing Club, Youngstown’s Golden String Boxing Club and local trainer Jack Loew’s South Side Boxing Club while other fighters hailed from Ashtabula, Cleveland, Lorain and Toledo in Ohio, New Castle, Dubois and Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania, Detroit with the Murray twins from England rounding out the card.
