Donald Trump needs to be impeached

DEAR EDITOR: The total lack of empathy shown by 47 as he turned a sympathy message to families of 67 people grieving loved ones lost in the DC air crash into a MAGA rant against DEI is one of the more disgusting recent examples of his narcissistic character. Angered by a press question as to how he could conflate the crash with DEI, he snapped “I have common sense, OK”. On “OK,” I wish the entire press room had shouted “No, that is not OK.” Every time our felonious President spouts misinformation, all Americans, not only the press, must call him out. There are many things ...

Distance yourselves from the bully

DEAR EDITOR: We all knew one growing up. The playground bully. We saw him pick on smaller kids after school or at recess. We saw him pull on girls’ ponytails. We saw him lift a pack of chewing gum at the drugstore. We saw him drinking beer behind the movie theater. He lied to our teachers. Once we saw him steal a bicycle at the park. He was not the sharpest axe in the shed. He would often cozy up to us; want to be our “friend;” to coerce us into joining him on his various adventures. But the wiser among us knew that hanging with him would only get us into trouble with our ...

Education can take you anywhere

DEAR EDITOR: Education is the key to all doors of opportunities, and forms the map to guide us through the maze of roads in our lives. It frees us from poverty, if we are poor, and gives us better insight and appreciation, if we were born rich. Education has no boundaries and no expiration dates. We often wrongly equate poverty as a cause of lack of education. The myth has been repeated so much, and for so long, that we actually believe it. Started from humble beginnings are: Abraham Lincoln, Oprah Winfrey, Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon, Larry Ellison, CEO of the giant software, ...

Dictator for just a day? That’s not very likely

DEAR EDITOR: As a veteran I must speak out against oligarchy, totalitarianism, tyranny, megalomania, insanity, and yes the cowards in my former political party. I plead to Congress and USSC Justices to stop the insanity of implementing Canadian tariffs. There may be a justification for placing a significant tariff on Mexico considering the immigration problem and for other reasons with China. But what is the justification for placing any tariff let alone a 25% tariff on Canada, our national ally for generations of United States citizens? Have we become so immoral that we want to ...

Racist in chief and his attack on DEI

DEAR EDITOR: I will never understand how DEI has become the new right boogeyman. DEI initiatives simply try to bring more voices to the table, to enfranchise the disenfranchised and to include those that have been previously oppressed. But seemingly none of that matters. It is a convenient label that can be used to spread racism under thinner and thinner veils. These days I don’t think there is any use tiptoeing around things anymore. This is racism, pure and simple. What else can “anti-DEI” mean? What else can Trump mean when he blamed DEI for the D.C. air collision? That ...

Nepotism continues to happen in Youngstown

DEAR EDITOR: So Tito Brown hired his daughter-in-law for a city position. Is anyone surprised? I took a written civil service test in 2018 for the Youngstown Water Department collections supervisor position. I finished first on the test, I have been a lifelong resident of Youngstown and I hold a degree from YSU. To this day, I still have those test results. I interviewed with water commissioner Harry Johnson and the office manager. Both said I was the most qualified for the job, but the final decision was up to Brown. After more than a week’s wait, I called and was told the ...
