Neil D. Schor 1963-2023

Born Aug. 28, 1963, in Cleveland to Rudolph and Rosalind Schor, Neil’s kindness, sense of humor and devotion to his family and friends at every stage of life made a lasting impact on everyone he met.

Neil graduated from Beachwood High School in 1982 and the University of Michigan in 1986.

While at Michigan, Neil met the love of his life, Harriet Lemberger, during one of Harriet’s sorority functions. They shared 40 years together, more than 33 of those in marriage, and they were always there to support each other through the ups and downs at every stage of life.

Neil earned his law degree at The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law in 1989, beginning his career at what is now Harrington, Hoppe and Mitchell in Youngstown. Neil remained at the firm for the entirety of his career, becoming a partner in 1998 and serving as a member of the firm’s management committee from 2015 to 2020.

Beyond being a dedicated member of the firm, Neil was an active member of the law community, serving on the memorial and admissions committees of the Mahoning County Bar Association, the American Inns of Court and the continuing law education commission for the Ohio State Bar Association, as well as serving as its coordinator for the U.S. District Court Advisory Committee.

In addition to the legal arena, Neil was passionately involved in the local Youngstown Jewish community. He was an active member of Temple El Emeth, serving as a board member since 1996, and on multiple committees over the years, including representative to the Commission for Jewish Education, and synagogue co-president with Harriet from 2016 to 2018. Neil also served on the board of directors for the Youngstown Jewish Community Center, Jewish Community Relations Council and Youngstown Area Jewish Federation, where he was president-elect in 2022 and became president this year.

Neil was also president of the Aaron Grossman Lodge of B’nai B’rith from 2012 to 2023. For his extraordinary dedication to the Youngstown Jewish community, Neil earned the 2013 Abe Harshman Leadership Award from the Youngstown Area Jewish Federation.

Neil’s community contributions extended well beyond the legal and Jewish spheres, as evidenced through his work on the boards of directors of the Youngstown Playhouse, Stambaugh Auditorium and Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley, along with his involvement in the government affairs council of the Youngstown Warren Regional Chamber of Commerce. Neil was a member of the esteemed Leadership Mahoning Valley Class of 2000, remaining on the organization’s board and chairing its annual Justice Day.

For all of his dedication to social and humanitarian causes, Neil was almost as equally devoted to his love of sports. A lifelong fan of his beloved Cleveland Browns and University of Michigan football and basketball, Neil did everything he could to keep up with games and scores and news about his teams, even sneaking technology into wholly unrelated events to accomplish this. He passed along this enthusiasm to his family, especially his daughters and future son-in-law.

Neil was also an ardent music enthusiast who loved going to concerts and listening to the weekly top-40 countdowns from the ’70s and ’80s, and he also enjoyed staying informed by reading up on current events.

As passionate and dedicated as Neil was to his various communities and social causes, he was most devoted to his family, rarely missing his children’s events like swim meets, karate tournaments, tennis matches, and band and orchestra performances.

Whenever a family member, friend or community contact had a major life event, whether joyous or sad, Neil was always there in those moments to help laud or lift them.

His indomitable spirit in the face of challenges — including several with respect to his health over recent years — was utterly inspirational; he met each and every one with strength, courage, bravery and dignity. But even through the challenging times, Neil’s keen sense of humor never wavered. From impressions to “personalized” lyrics to popular songs, to unexpected and hilarious one-liners, he provided many laughlines to the faces of friends and family over the years.

Neil’s devotion, loyalty and passion for everyone and everything he loved and cared about was apparent to all he met; his impact reached untold thousands and will be lasting.

He is survived by his sisters, Eileen Seiger and Lori Ulanow; wife, Harriet Schor; sister-in-law, Margo Lemberger; daughters, Alyssa Schor and Meryl Schor; and future son-in-law, Connor Begle.

He was preceded in death by his father, Rudolph Schor; and his mother, Rosalind Schor.

Services will be at noon Sunday, Oct. 22, 2023, at Shriver-Allison- Courtley-Weller-King Funeral Home in Youngstown, where friends and family may visit beginning at 10:30 a.m. There will be a livestream of the service; contact Alyssa Schor at alyssaschor29@gmail.com for details.
