Joan Z. Shugarts 1945-2022

Born Aug 8, 1945, in Alexandria, Va., she is the daughter of and predeceased in death by Laura and Harold Shugarts of Clinton, Md.

She is survived by her sisters, Tamara Harrington (brother-in-law, Earl) and Diane Gagnon (brother-in-law, Leonard) of Marshall, Va.; a niece, Julie Gagnon Odom (husband, Lane and children, Jackson, Ava Claire and Annalise) of Niceville, Fla.; and cousins, Nancy Schulz and Johnny Ray of Canfield.

Joan was a high school English and special education teacher, working at two schools in Maryland and another in Austintown. She taught over 46 years and truly opened the minds of many students and touched their hearts.

A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 20, 2022, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 4545 New Road, Austintown, with the Rev. Gregory F. Fedor officiating, with a celebration of life at 1 p.m. at Green Haven Memorial Gardens, Canfield. Internment will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 22, 2022, in Green Haven.

In honor of Joan’s love of her many dogs, memorial tributes may take the form of contributions to Angels for Animals, 4550 W. South Range Road Canfield, OH 44406.
