Vertie Lee Taylor 1930-2020

FLINT, Mich. — Mrs. Vertie Lee Jackson Taylor, 89, entered eternal rest Tuesday, April 7, 2020.

Mrs. Taylor was born Sept. 21, 1930, in Huttig, Ark., the daughter of Mr. Matthias Jackson and Mrs. Matilda Highshaw Jackson. Mrs. Taylor retired from General Motors AC Spark Plugs in 1988. At General Motors, she served in the position of an assembly line worker and was always supportive and caring of others.

Mrs. Taylor was a chartered and founding member of the Mount Calvary Missionary Baptist Church, Flint, where she served faithfully in the Music Ministry and other church activities. She enjoyed long walks, playing golf with friends and watching professional sports with her husband. In addition, she was an excellent seamstress. She was supportive of her children’s and grandchildren’s activities and special events.

Mrs. Taylor enjoyed traveling with her husband, Otis J. Taylor, and they were both part of the Travel Club. In years prior, she loved to attend her sons’ college football games and was a dedicated member of the Jack and Jill of America Organization and AC Spark Plug Choir.

Mrs. Taylor was an excellent cook and well known for her delicious strawberry cake, potato salad and hot water cornbread. She enjoyed exchanging recipes with her daughter. She looked forward to hosting the family holiday gatherings for 30 years, where she took a vested interest in encouraging her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Taylor had a contagious and joyful laugh that would create enthusiasm and fun. She persevered in the midst of challenges and always thanked God for his mighty blessings. No matter how things might seem, she always exhibited a very positive demeanor.

Mrs. Taylor leaves to cherish her memory, daughter, Pamela (Henry) Holden of Girard; four sons, Ricky (Joyce) Taylor of Southfield, Mich., Michael (Juanda) Taylor of Solon, Gregory Taylor (Lee Anne Brewer) of Ann Arbor, Mich., and Darryl (Kimberly) Taylor of Rockhill, S.C.; grandchildren, Nickole Taylor, Ricky Taylor Jr., Henry Holden III, Lydia Holden, Tyler Taylor, Jaron Taylor, Aaron Taylor, Alexandria Taylor, Victoria Taylor and Robert Matthew Taylor; six great-grandchildren; two sisters- in-law, Queen Esther French of Mt. Morris and Anna Faye Robinson of Flint; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.

Besides her parents, Matthias and Matilda Jackson, she was preceded in death by her loving husband, Otis J. Taylor; brother, Albert Jackson; sisters, Lydia Grandison, Mildred Fuller and Ruth Miles; and brothers-in-law, Johnnie Grandison and Bonnie French.

Private services were held with the family. A Memorial Service will be held at a later date.
