YOUNGSTOWN — A Youngstown police crash report reveals that a 66-year-old Boardman man died in an early-morning motorcycle crash on the northbound entrance ramp to state Route 711 on May 18.

The report states that Mark D. Backhaus, 66, of Hitchcock Road in Boardman, was driving his 2011 Harley Davidson FLH onto the ramp from Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard at 3:31 a.m. when the motorcycle went off the road on the left shoulder at the curve and lost control before re-entering the on-ramp and landing on the road.

Backhaus was taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital and was listed in critical condition, the report states. However, the police department was advised that Backhaus died May 24.

At the time of the crash, a news outlet reported that one person was injured in a crash that shut down the ramp. A Youngstown police officer was parked on the ramp and put down road flares, blocking the entrance to the ramp from Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard to northbound 711 at about 5 a.m., the outlet reported.

Police did not provide more information about the accident or the condition of the victim, the news account stated.

Backhaus’ obituary stated that Backhaus, who was formerly of Muskego, Wisconsin, died May 25 at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital. It did not mention that he died in a crash.

“Mark loved all things Harley Davidson, he never shied away from lending a hand and was a talented machinist and welder,” his obituary stated.

“He was a transplant to Ohio almost 15 years ago and was excited to have his own home after living in apartments for more than four decades,” it stated.

He had two children and three grandchildren and also is survived by five siblings, his stepmother and many nieces and nephews.

The crash report did not list any contributing circumstances as possible explanations for the accident, only listing the motorcycle running off of the road as being the “first harmful event,” and the vehicle overturning as the “most harmful event” in the crash.

The posted speed in that area is 35 mph, but the report does not state what speed Backhaus was traveling. No alcohol or drug testing was done, and no alcohol or drug use was suspected, the report states. It also does not state whether Backhaus was wearing a helmet.

Under the section of the report that reads “Driver Distracted by,” the report lists “other/unknown.” The report, which was written by the Youngstown Police Department, does not state if there were any witnesses to the crash.
