Canfield Middle School proposed as seniors’ site

CANFIELD — This week’s city council meeting was short but did present interesting commentary when former Councilman Bruce Neff presented an idea.

“I would like to see an ad-hoc economic development committee formed to see if we can come up with a plan for Redgate,” Neff said. “We should check with the school district and see if there is still interest in trading the middle school for property at Redgate Farms.”

Neff was on city council in May 2022 when voters rejected a 6.9-mill levy that would have raised more than $107 million to build a new middle school on Redgate property. It would have given the city the middle school.

“Voters said (the new proposed school) was too far,” Neff said. “It’s not too far.”

He said if something could be worked out, the city could take the present middle school and convert it to a senior center.

“People keep asking me what the city is doing for its senior citizens,” Neff said. “The middle school would make a great senior center.”

Council President Christine Oliver said she has learned of interest in a possible solar farming operation at Redgate. City Manager David D’Apolito said the property has and continues to be leased for farming, so it has brought income for the city.

In other business, council declared four police vehicles as surplus, giving D’Apolito the authority to dispose of them. On the resolution were four vehicles — a 2021 Chevy Tahoe, two 2020 Chevy Tahoes and a 2018 Dodge Charger.

“We can either sell to another municipality, or we can auction them on our web page,” he told council.

Starting at $3.23/week.
