Child reports man tried to lure her into vehicle on South Side

YOUNGSTOWN — Youngstown police arrested a man on a warrant Tuesday while investigating a report of a child who said a man in a white Chevrolet Suburban-type vehicle tried to lure her into his vehicle on Ravenwood Avenue on the South Side that morning.

The girl said she was walking her sibling to the school bus stop on Ravenwood near Market Street when the man, who she described as being in his 30s with a “baby face,” drove by slowly. He then turned around and pulled into a driveway, rolled down the window and gave her his cellphone number, and tried multiple times to lure her into his vehicle about 9:20 a.m.

He offered to take her to the bus stop, to school or “wherever she wished to go,” a police report states. He was smoking marijuana at the time and pulled out bags of drugs and said he “had stuff for her,” the report states.

The girl called her mother “due to her feeling as if she was in danger,” the report states. As other children approached, the driver “pulled off,” it states.

She told police the vehicle was a Suburban or Tahoe, white and “newer.” Her mother called police.

The officer speaking to the girl gave the description of the vehicle to another officer, who found a white Tahoe on Cottage Grove Avenue, not far from the location where the incident took place.

Officers learned that the man in the vehicle had a warrant for possession of dangerous drugs out of Pennsylvania and took him to the Mahoning County jail on the warrant.

The man had no new charges in Youngstown Municipal Court on Thursday morning but has a number of criminal cases on file in that court and in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court dating back more than a decade.

Starting at $3.23/week.
