16-year-old pleads guilty in shooting, gets prison sentence

YOUNGSTOWN — Derrick Darrington, 16, pleaded guilty Thursday in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court to aggravated robbery and felonious assault with gun specifications in a July 27 shooting in Youngstown and was sentenced to 6 to 7.5 years in prison.

Judge Theresa Dellick of Mahoning County Juvenile Court bound over Darrington’s case to adult court in January, and Darrington was indicted Feb. 27 by a county grand jury.

Judge R. Scott Krichbaum sentenced Darrington to the amount of prison time recommended by the prosecution and defense.

A Youngstown police report states that officers responded to Woodcrest Avenue on the East Side at 9:09 p.m. for a shooting and learned that a male was shot inside a home. Officers provided aid to the victim until ambulance personnel arrived, and he was taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital.

Darrington’s indictment states he caused serious physical injuries to a 17-year-old as a result of Darrington committing or attempting to commit a theft offense. Prosecutors said the victim was shot in the chest and suffered a spinal injury that left him partially paralyzed.

Attempts to find out where Darrington is currently housed and whether prison will be any different for a 16-year-old than an adult were not successful, as were attempts to learn more about the shooting.
