Man arrested in aggravated robbery with deadly weapon

YOUNGSTOWN — A man, 32, was arrested following the aggravated robbery of a cellphone store on Mahoning Avenue on Wednesday night.

A Youngstown police report states that officers were called to the store at 7:58 p.m. at an address on Mahoning Avenue that was blacked out under the provisions of Marsy’s Law, which protects victims of crime, including businesses.

The call was for an aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon on or about the suspect, kidnapping, resisting arrest and obstructing official business, according to the report.

Sixteen officers were involved in the call. The report states that when officers arrived, they “took statements from the … victims.” It added that the “investigation led to the suspect’s location and subsequent arrest.

The report does not provide any other information about the type of robbery, details to explain the kidnapping aspect of the case, or how or where police captured the suspect.

The report does name the suspect, but no one by that name appeared Thursday in Youngstown Municipal Court records as having any new charges. The person’s mug shot and details of his arrest can be found in Mahoning County jail records. The man is likely to be identified in court records today, and further details on whether he is charged with an aggravated robbery or kidnapping will be provided then.

But the report does state that at 7:20 a.m., while a Youngstown officer was transporting the suspect to the Mahoning County jail, he opened the rear door of the cruiser when the suspect ran while handcuffed through a parking lot.

The officer pursued the suspect on foot until he reached the edge of the parking lot and deployed his stun gun. It did not stop the suspect, but the officer deployed the stun gun a second time the suspect fell to the ground. With the help of a sheriff’s deputy, the officer was able to control the suspect until other officers arrived to assist

The suspect was taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital for evaluation and then was taken to the jail without incident. The chase resulted in the man being charged with an additional offense called “escape,” a high-level felony, the report states.
