Campbell to honor veterans ahead of Memorial Day

CAMPBELL — Memorial Day may be several weeks away, but the city isn’t waiting until later this month to honor several dozen of its veterans.

Beginning around 8 a.m. Saturday, flags will be placed at St. Nicholas Cemetery off Struthers-Liberty Road between Hyatt and Sanderson avenues. They will be installed at the gravesites of 50 to 60 people to honor them for having served their country, Mayor Bryan Tedesco said during his monthly town hall meeting Wednesday evening at the community center in Roosevelt Park.

Also during the 45-minute session, various upgrades to the park were discussed, including to the five baseball fields for which improvement efforts began three years ago, the mayor told his audience of a few dozen. Specifically, a specialized substance has been added to accelerate the drying process and eliminate standing water after heavy rains, he noted.

Negotiations are continuing with Precision Property Maintenance of Youngstown to continue improvements to the fields, Tedesco said.

The mayor also brought up the city’s annual Memorial Day program, set for 10 a.m. May 27 at Campbell Memorial High School. The gathering will feature performances from the high school marching band, along with a roll call in which the names of Campbell veterans who have made the ultimate sacrifice or are missing in action will be read aloud.

In addition, a few residents expressed a desire to see a dog park installed in the city. Tedesco said that a piece of property on 12th Street could be a possible site.

Also mentioned was the health and community development center, for which the city received a $10.5 million grant earlier this year. The funds were part of a $64.2 million package for 28 projects in 20 Ohio counties to improve access to health care resources. The Campbell School District will build the 55,000-square-foot facility, estimated between $12 and $13 million, near the Community Literacy Workforce and Cultural Center on state Route 616.

Among its offerings will be on-site and telehealth mental health counseling, a variety of health care services, educational programs associated with the medical field and an on-site greenhouse and pantry to offer greater access to food, hygiene products and school supplies.

The facility will serve Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties.

To further address residents’ concerns and needs, Tedesco intends to continue bringing guest speakers to his town hall sessions. Names he floated at Wednesday’s meeting include Lynn Maro, who’s running for county prosecutor in the Nov. 5 general election.
