Canfield school board hears latest figures for a new middle school

CANFIELD — New numbers were presented for the replacement of the middle school during the Canfield Board of Education meeting earlier this week.

The overall number came in at $67,307,707.

“June and July are target dates,” said Canfield Superintendent Joe Knoll. “The estimate is $52 million for the new middle school and another $15 for renovations at the district’s two elementary buildings and the high school. Figure an additional $7.2 million to build on the Shields Road property.”

The anticipated costs for 2024 broke down to $46,647,325 for a new grades five through eight middle school, $3,834,000 for a new additional gym for the middle school, and $1,738,900 for the demolition of the old middle school.

Renovations included power upgrades, a secure vestibule and pavement improvements at C.H. Campbell, a secure vestibule, roof and paving improvements at Hilltop Elementary, and a roof and paving and drainage improvements at the high school.

Knoll offered a second set of figures that he said should be done this summer. Titled the summer project list, it included a new A/C unit for C.H. Campbell, secure vestibules at both elementary buildings, and a partial roof repair at the high school. Those items were all part of the renovations in the overall price tag for a levy, but Knoll said they shouldn’t wait.

“We have carryover funds that will cover the cost of those summer projects,” Knoll said. “The price for those summer projects would come off the cost of the levy.”

He said the board could choose to go for the total overall amount and use the excess from the projects being completed this year to do other needed projects, or the board could take the price off the levy. In either case, Knoll said the board needs to pass two resolutions to be on the November ballot. One must be passed in June, and the second one in July.

Board President Nader Atway said, “We do have a carryover fund and we can’t wait on these priorities. They need to be addressed immediately.”

Knoll said by next month’s board meeting, he will have better numbers, including the cost of building a new middle school on the Shields Road property. On a different matter, Knoll announced the district would not have school on April 8 for the Solar Eclipse. The district will require all staff to show up for a professional development day.
