Man who stabbed neighbor on South Side pleads guilty

YOUNGSTOWN — Micheal A. Hewlett, 45, of East Midlothian Boulevard, pleaded guilty Monday to felonious assault with a recommendation that he get two to three years in prison for stabbing another man on July 4.

Hewlett will be sentenced later by Judge John Durkin of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court. Hewlett’s plea prevented a trial from starting on Monday.

A Youngstown police report states that officers were called to a home in the 3300 block of Southern Boulevard for a stabbing and learned from a woman that Hewlett had stabbed his nearby neighbor.

She said she arrived home to find Hewlett walking out the front door of her apartment. She asked Hewlett what he was doing and he said he “wanted a few cigarettes and a dollar.”

The woman said Hewlett walked to the neighbor’s apartment “and began stabbing him.” The woman said the two men “tussled around.” After Hewlett stabbed the other man, the other man held Hewlett on the ground, the report states.

The victim then let Hewlett up from the ground, and Hewlett ran into the victim’s apartment and grabbed a box before running west on Lucius Avenue, the report states.

The victim said Hewlett had come to his apartment asking for money and cigarettes, and the victim said he did not have any money. He said Shelton then started to stab him.

The victim had a laceration below one eye and another laceration behind his ear “with significant bleeding,” the report states. Durkin told Hewlett that “based on your acceptance of responsibility, I will approve that sentence,” meaning the two to three years in prison.

Prosecutors said they would “stand silent” on whether Hewlett can be released from prison on judicial release after serving six months in prison. The judge said he does not know enough about the case now to offer an opinion on whether he will approve judicial release. Judicial release is an early release approved by the sentencing judge.
