Boardman resident indicted in township murder

YOUNGSTOWN — A Boardman man was indicted Thursday in connection with a Jan. 6 Boardman shooting death of a Youngstown man.

Jerome L. Tubbs, 24, of Mathews Road, was indicted on murder, felonious assault and tampering with records in the shooting death of Michael Kosarich II, 30, near the intersection of Market Street and Indianola Road.

The murder and felonious assault charges also each contain a gun specification and a specification of a drive-by shooting. If he is convicted of the murder and a drive-by specification, Tubbs could be sentenced to about 20 years to life. He is likely to be arraigned within the next couple weeks in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court.

Kosarich was a Struthers High School graduate, auto mechanic and loved the outdoors, four-wheeling, dirt bikes, playing guitar and football, according to his obituary.

Tubbs, who also has an address on Potomac Avenue on Youngstown’s South Side, was arrested Feb. 16 on a murder warrant out of Mahoning County Area Court in Boardman.

Tubbs waived a preliminary hearing in that court Feb. 27, and bond was set at $350,000.

Boardman police responded to the area of Market and Indianola at 2:30 a.m. Jan. 6 for calls about gunshots being heard. Officers found a car at the intersection with Kosarich inside. He had been shot several times, according to a Boardman police report.

Kosarich was taken to St. Elizabeth Hospital, where he died.

Boardman police said someone opened fire on his vehicle. Boardman police Chief Todd Werth said shortly after the killing that detectives were following multiple leads. He said the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation processed Kosarich’s vehicle for evidence.
