WHAT: Board of Education

PRESENT: Jody Klase , Jessica Krumpak, Donna Shields, Nick Gallo and Kristina Merola

The board:

● Approved an agreement with Boak and Sons Inc at $391,506 for replacement and repairs of certain areas of the high school’s flat roof, which has been flooding. Work will begin in July and start over the high school classrooms and then move above the gymnasium. The district obtained the quote through Ohio Schools Council cooperative purchasing program.

●Approved transfer of $400,000 from the general fund to the athletic complex fund for Phase 5 of the stadium project, which is a concession / restroom building. Work will be done in the summer. Nine bids were received for the project which are being reviewed.

● Set graduation for 10 a.m. May 25 at the high school.

● Hired Julia Robey as high school math teacher at $68,639 and Nathan Ifft as high school intervention specialist at $42,110.

● Heard from several parents whose children want to do more than one extracurricular activity per season such as cheerleading and majorettes or football and marching band. Superintendent Kevin O’Connell said there will be situations where the two extracurriculars overlap and require the student to pick one. High School Principal Gary Carkido said it would not be possible for a varsity football player to play in the game and then at halftime go play in the band when they need to be hydrated. Gallo said it would be challenging to do two extracurriculars in one season in addition to school academics. O’Connell said he wants what is best for each student.

● Approved high school credit recovery summer program June 3 to 27 with Shannon Averall as credit recovery monitor for grades ninth to 12th at $23 per hour.

● Heard from Klase that school administrators and staff will review marketing and communications with the public about the schools. Suggestions include newsletter, social media sites and “State of the Schools” public update meetings.
