YSU football player charged with felonious assault at downtown club

YOUNGSTOWN — Dominique Julius, 20, of Philadelphia, a Youngstown State University football player, was arraigned Wednesday in Youngs-town Municipal Court on a felonious assault charge in a Feb. 11 incident at the Social Club on Commerce Street downtown.

Julius was booked into the Mahoning County jail Tuesday on the charge after he turned himself in. The charge stems from a 1 a.m. Feb. 11 assault of a man at the Social Bar and Tapas on Commerce Street downtown, according to Shaina Rochford, a Youngstown assistant prosecutor.

Julius was with other YSU football players at the time, according to a Youngstown police report. The victim is a man, 21, from Leetonia.

Magistrate Meghan Brundege set bond at $10,000 and ordered Julius to have no contact with the victim. No plea was required.

Julius said he was going to hire his own attorney. Julius returns to court at 9:45 a.m. March 7 for a preliminary hearing. He was released from the county jail later Wednesday.

A Youngstown police officer was working secondary employment at the business when he saw a group of males near the front entrance engaged in a loud argument, the report states. The officer exited his cruiser and put himself between the combatants and told both groups to disperse. Both groups were following instructions but still yelling taunts at each other.

At the same time, behind the officer a man was struck by another man. The victim collapsed to the ground, struck his head on the curb and was unconscious, “bleeding profusely, from the head,” the report stated.

The officer called for an ambulance and backup. While waiting for an ambulance, the victim was taken by private vehicle to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital.

The officer said the manager of the club that told him the combatants were “members of the Youngstown State football team.” An altercation started in the bar and two players were escorted out by bar security.

When the patrons got to the front door, they began to yell and scream at the security officer. Another member of the football team began to act in an aggressive manner toward the security officer, the report states. It was at that point the officer stood between the “other patrons” and the security officer, the report states.
