11-year-old girl brings gun to school
Police retrieve weapon from East Middle School student
YOUNGSTOWN — An 11-year-old girl was arrested at East Middle School in Youngstown on Thursday morning after police found a gun on her person.
According to a news release from Youngstown police capt. Jason Simon, chief of detectives, the girl was transported to the Mahoning County Juvenile Justice Center on two counts of illegal conveyance / possession of a deadly weapon in a school safety zone and one count of carrying concealed weapons.
In the news release, Simon stated that the Special Victims Unit and Crime Scene Unit were called to East Middle School about 8:15 a.m. to assist school security with a female possessing a firearm.
“It does not appear that the juvenile female intended to harm anyone at the school or on school property and there is no threat to the public,” Simon added.
Early in the investigation, the release continued, “it appears the juvenile female obtained the firearm from her home.”
Stacy Quinones, Youngstown City School District communications and public relations director, stated in a news release that the district took quick action after learning that a student may have a handgun.
“The administrative team immediately began its investigation and they discovered that a scholar possessed a handgun,” Quinones stated. “East Middle School followed all emergency plan operations involving law enforcement. Please be assured everyone is safe, the building is secure and a weapon was never discharged.”
The district’s release concluded, “The well-being of all scholars and staff is the district’s top priority. We are grateful to law enforcement for their prompt response and will continue to work with them during this investigation.”
