CANFIELD — Anyone who visits Marlene Samek’s Canfield home will not see the same holiday setup from year to year due to her passion for collection unusual and interesting Christmas decor.

“I started collecting 50 years ago,” Samek said. “I have stuff from my mother and decorations from the 1950s.”

Samek has enjoyed growing her collection. Seven years ago, Marlene and husband, Michael, moved to Canfield and that is when she discovered the Angels for Animals Veterinary Care and Shelter’s antique, collectibles and Christmas sale. She has been an early-bird shopper at the sale ever since.

“Last year, I made a big find,” she said. “I purchased three Pinocchios made in Italy. I also found a lighted Abominable Snowman that I love to display.”

Marlene said her home’s basement holds a lot of collectibles in storage. Only a fraction of it is displayed for the Christmas holiday.

“I just don’t have the time to unwrap it all and put it out,” she said.

She said that each year she tries to be different than years past, but part of the joy of collecting is finding and purchasing new pieces. She was part of the Friday early-bird sale and definitely went home with some new treasures.

She said 95% of her collection comes from sales like the Angels for Animals event. At other times, the pieces come from out-of-the-ordinary sources.

She has a 6-foot Santa made of wood that her husband pulled from a trash pile. With a little TLC, Santa now appears each December at the Samek house.

Another large wooden cutout Samek uses at Christmas is a full-size wooden Grinch and his dog, Max. Marlene said she had a really good artist cut and paint the pieces.

Samek is not alone in shopping the sale that benefits Angels for Animals Veterinary Care and Shelter, which besides vet services, offers grooming, as well as end-of-life services along with cremation.

“This is our 21st sale,” Kim Moff, media relations for Angels for Animals, said. “Every year there is something new donated out of the generosity of people who want to help the animals and pass on their treasures.”

The sale will run 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, then continue 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dec. 9 and Dec. 15.

Starting at $3.23/week.
