Youngstown birthday celebration set for June 22

YOUNGSTOWN — Youngstown’s birthday will be celebrated June 22 with cake, refreshments and a walking tour of Wick Avenue.

The birthday celebration is being organized by the Mahoning Valley Historical Society, the city of Youngstown and Youngstown CityScape.

The free event starts at 5 p.m. at the Arms Family Museum, 648 Wick Ave. with a birthday cake and refreshments, said Lindsay Samblanet, the historical society’s spokeswoman.

After that, guided walking tours will be offered of Wick Avenue, a historic street in the city, she said.

“Groups will come together and discuss the buildings along Wick and the city’s history,” Samblanet said.

Past Youngstown birthday celebrations have attracted as many as 150 people, she said.

In 1796, John Young surveyed the land that would become Youngstown. A year later, he bought the town from the Connecticut Western Reserve Land Co. The establishment of the settlement was formally registered in 1802.
