18-year-old faces 21 charges for 3-day crime spree

YOUNGSTOWN — Marcus J. Bosworth, 18, of Timber Ridge Drive, Austintown, was indicted by a Mahoning County grand jury on 21 charges.

The charges range from six counts of grand theft of a motor vehicle to two counts of failure to comply with the orders of a police officer, stemming from a three-day March crime spree in Austintown.

If convicted of the charges, Bosworth could get more than 20 years in prison. He has been in the Mahoning County jail since March 17, when he was arrested by the Austintown Police Department.

In addition to six counts of grand theft of a motor vehicle, he faces three counts of criminal damaging or endangering, two counts of failure to comply with the orders of a police officer and single counts of receiving stolen property, arson, tampering with evidence, possessing criminal tools, falsification, failure to stop after a nonpublic road accident, breaking and entering, theft, escape and obstructing official business. Some of the charges are misdemeanors.

The crimes began with a 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche being stolen from a parking lot in the 400 block of South Raccoon Road either late March 13 or sometime March 14. The owner told Austintown police the keys were inside and the doors were unlocked.

On March 15, Austintown police were called to the first block of Kenmore Court for someone knifing the tires on a vehicle, flattening them.

A man at the home said he heard air leaving the tires and looked out to see two males running away. About that time a GMC sport utility vehicle went by and officers tried to make a traffic stop on it at the Wendy’s restaurant on Raccoon Road, but the vehicle fled. Officers chased but terminated the pursuit.

Officers were able to obtain identification of the driver of the vehicle as being Bosworth.

He is the same person police had seen earlier that day with another male. Bosworth identified himself by another name. He had a knife with him, but the males were not arrested.

Police obtained the license plate off the SUV as being registered to a person on Timber Ridge Drive in Austintown, the residence of Bosworth and his mother. His mother told police Bosworth was driving the vehicle. She told Bosworth by phone to bring it home. When Bosworth got there, he apparently saw the officers and fled on foot and got away, according to a police report.

On March 16, Austintown officers were dispatched to the Sheetz gas station on Mahoning Avenue in Austintown for a suspicious vehicle. Officers arrived and saw two males in a Cadillac. One officer blocked the Cadillac in with his cruiser. Another cruiser placed stop sticks in front of the Cadillac.

Officers ordered the males out of the car at gunpoint. Bosworth was the driver, and a 17-year-old whose name was redacted from the police report was a passenger in the vehicle, which came back as stolen. Both males were arrested.

Bosworth was taken to the Mahoning County jail, where he attempted to run from police again but was not successful. The juvenile was charged with disorderly conduct and released to his guardian.
