Food bank starts 32nd Harvest for Hunger campaign

Three-month drive seeks to collect funds, nonperishables

YOUNGSTOWN — Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley is inviting the community to participate in the 32nd annual Harvest for Hunger campaign during March, April and May.

Harvest for Hunger is a food and funds drive that takes place each year to help restock the food bank’s shelves for the spring and summer.

If you are interested in participating in the campaign by conducting a food and / or funds drive to benefit the food bank, contact Julia Varner at 330-792-5522 Ext. 111 or visit www.mahoningvalleysecondharvest.org to download a registration form.

Check Out Hunger, a cashier-led fundraising effort in grocery stores across the region, gives customers the opportunity to donate $2, $5, $10 or another preferred amount at the register at local Giant Eagle and GetGo stores. All funds raised and food collected remain in Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties to help feed friends and neighbors.

Last year, Harvest for Hunger raised more than $300,000 and collected more than 32,000 pounds of food.

The 2023 Harvest for Hunger sponsors are Giant Eagle, 21-WFMJ TV and WBCB, The Tribune Chronicle / The Vindicator, Cumulus Radio Stations HOT 101, K-105, Y-103 and Z-104, and UFCW Local 880.

In 2022, the food bank distributed more than 9.5 million pounds of food, including 2.8 million pounds of produce. For more information, call 330-792-5522, visit www.mahoningvalleysecondharvest.org or follow Facebook@SHFBMV.
