Pa. dig site tied to Hubbard cold case
HUBBARD — An excavation site in Farrell, Pa., is related to the police investigation into the whereabouts of a Hubbard woman who disappeared 45 years ago.
Hubbard city is among the police agencies probing the July 4, 1977, disappearance of Billie Lynn Groff, who was 26, said Hubbard police Chief Robert Thompson. “We are still looking into it,” he said Saturday.
Farrell police, Pennsylvania State Police and the Mercer County District Attorney’s Office also are active in the Farrell site excavation. The location on private property was not disclosed.
According to the Ohio Attorney General’s office, Groff would be 71 now. In 1977, she was 5 feet, 1 inch tall, weighed 120 pounds and had brown hair and hazel eyes. She is a 1966 Farrell High School graduate.
“Billie was last seen by her husband on July 4, 1977, near Westview Avenue. She was speaking with a friend by telephone the same evening about 10 p.m., when she abruptly ended the conversation, stating: ‘They are coming up the driveway, I have to go,'” the AG’s case description states.
It is unknown whom she meant by “they.”
Her husband and two children were attending the city’s July 4 celebration at the time and returned about 11 p.m. Her husband filed a missing person report two days later. She left all of her belongings and clothing behind.
Groff was said to be wearing a white T-shirt, blue cut-off jeans and thong sandals, according to the National Missing Person Directory. At the time, searches were conducted in wooded areas and lakes.
