The number of COVID-19 cases among Ohio prisons dropped dramatically in the past two weeks.

Last week and the week before, 256 active COVID-19 infections wre reported among staff at Ohio prisons, but the number is down to 17 this week. The number of inmate cases last week and the week before was 246, but that number is down to 33 this week.

COVID-19 cases at the three area prisons also were low this week.

The Northeast Ohio Correctional Center in Youngstown had just two inmate cases, the Ohio State Penitentiary in Youngstown had one staff case and one inmate case, and Trumbull Correctional Institution had no cases.

Ohio State Penitentiary had the most cases the previous week with six.

Apparently very little of the Ohio Department of Health data on COVID-19 infections at area nursing homes and assisted-living facilities was updated this week, but one facility in Mahoning County appears to have seen a spike in cases.

The Heritage Manor Nursing Home in Youngstown has 13 patient cases and one staff case this week. It has had either very few or no cases in the past couple of weeks.

About eight other Mahoning County facilities with several cases had not been updated from the previous week, suggesting the data was not accurate. Several other facilities had only two or three cases each.

Trumbull County and Columbiana County data did not appear to have been updated but only showed about four total cases in each county.

No new deaths were associated with area nursing homes or assisted-living facilities this week.

Statewide, the data showed that total nursing home and assisted-living patient cases dropped from 2,294 cases last week to 1,825 this week. Total staff cases dropped from 2,552 cases to 1,681 cases this week.
