First Night Youngstown canceled again

YOUNGSTOWN — First Night Youngstown, a family-friendly event held on New Year’s Eve throughout downtown, has been canceled for the second straight year because of COVID-19 concerns.

The only activity that remains this year is a fireworks display at midnight near the Market Street Bridge.

The event also was canceled last year because of the COVID-19 pandemic. While there are outdoor activities, many of them are inside buildings.

Last year was to be the 20th anniversary celebration of First Night Youngstown, and two fireworks displays were held.

Organizers want to hold a First Night event in the city next year.

The city’s board of control on Thursday agreed to pay $6,500 to First Night Youngstown to offset the cost of the fireworks.

Starting at $3.23/week.
