COVID-19 infections drop at Warren nursing home

A Trumbull County nursing home that had about 15 cases of COVID-19 last week, 11 of them among patients, saw a big decrease this week, according to Ohio Department of Health data.

Last week’s data showed the Washington Square Healthcare Center nursing home in Warren with 11 patient cases and five staff cases. But ODH data reported on its website Wednesday shows the facility has just one staff case this week. A message left with the facility on Friday was not returned.

During a phone call last week, the director of nursing for Washington Square agreed the number of patient cases was 11 and said the facility also had three current staff cases. The ODH had reported the facility having 11 patient cases and five staff cases last week.

The data from this week, including the facility’s cumulative case numbers dating back to April 15, 2020, suggest the numbers this week have been updated and are correct.

The Gillette Nursing Home in Warren had six patient cases and one staff case this week after having a smaller number last week. When contacted Friday, Todd Stein, co-owner of the facility, said he agreed with the current numbers.

Meanwhile, data for Mahoning County this week shows only one long-term care facility such as nursing homes and assisted-living facilities with more than a few cases.

The Canfield Healthcare Center nursing home on Canfield Road in Youngstown has six patient cases and one staff case this week. It had a smaller number last week. No one from the facility was available Friday to discuss the infection numbers.

Columbiana County has a low number of cases at its facilities this week, according to the ODH data.

Meanwhile, the number of COVID-19 infections at nursing homes and assisted-living facilities across the state this week rose again compared to the previous week. There are 752 patient cases this week, compared to 653 last week. There are 694 staff cases this week, compared to 613 last week. There were 539 patient cases and 541 staff cases two weeks ago.
