Campbell council OKs purchase of firetruck

CAMPBELL — The Campbell Fire Department will be receiving a newer fire engine at the request of the fire chief to better meet the needs of the city.

Council approved the purchase of a used 2015 Rosenbauer quick attack fire pumper truck from Brindlee Mountain Fire Apparatus LLC of Union Grove, Alabama, totaling $153,100. Half of the funds will come out of the safety forces levy with the rest split between the general fund and the infrastructure fund.

The purchase was approved earlier this month.

Fire Chief Stephan Dubic said Engine 2, a 1998 engine and pumper truck, is starting to show its age and can be cumbersome to take out on calls.

In June, the department began responding to all EMS calls to provide assistance to the responding EMS service. The department responded to 132 calls in September, 97 of which were EMS related. Last September, the department responded to 52 calls total. The year-to-date number is already at 715 calls compared to last year’s total of 451.

Dubic said a new truck is needed to accommodate the increase in calls, and the new engine will run alongside Engine 2 and will be the go-to truck for medical calls.

“Ever since we started running medical calls, we realized Engine 2 is just too big to bring out every time and it’s experiencing a lot more wear and tear,” Dubic said.

During the Tuesday council meeting, Dubic said Engine 2 sounded as if it was on its last leg the last time he brought it out on a call. He hopes that addition of the new truck will take some of the stress off of Engine 2 and allow it to stay in service a little bit longer.

Dubic said he’s thankful for the purchase and thinks it’s a great for the city. The new engine needs new lights and some minor tune-ups, but should be ready to serve in the next few weeks.
