Austintown man indicted in fatal hit-skip

AUSTINTOWN — An Austintown man was indicted Thursday in the death of a local woman killed in a hit-skip crash in March.

A Mahoning County grand jury indicted James Stehura, 49, of Wedgewood Drive, on one count of reckless homicide, one count of leaving the scene of an accident and one count of tampering with evidence, all felonies.

Stehura’s charges stem from a March 11 incident on Lancaster Drive, when he allegedly struck a woman with his truck while she was walking near the road with her partner. The woman, Linda Adams, 66, later died from her injuries.

Immediately after the crash, police posted a picture on social media of the type of Ford pickup truck they believed was involved. Several residents in the neighborhood also provided police with doorbell and surveillance camera video showing the truck and the crash.

The police report states that investigators gained a lead in the case when a description of the truck run through Bureau of Motor Vehicle records came back as a possible match for Stehura’s 2012 Ford F-350.

Police searched for Stehura at his residence but could not find him there.

The next morning, police received a call from an employee at Stehura’s tree-cutting business, who told them that when he arrived at the business garage that morning, he found Stehura’s truck parked inside, with front-end damage that matched what police described.

While police were preparing a search warrant, they received a call from an attorney representing Stehura, who told police he was willing to speak and to permit them to confiscate the truck.

The report states that Stehura also was seen leaving a Wedgewood-area bar only minutes before the crash. The police investigation revealed that Stehura consumed nine alcoholic beverages during about a four-hour period before leaving the bar, which is only 2 minutes away from Lancaster Drive. Security video from the bar showed him getting into the truck and leaving the bar’s parking lot.

At the conclusion of a lengthy investigation, Stehura was arrested on April 3, and made an initial appearance in Mahoning County Austintown Court. Judge Scott Hunter imposed a $15,000 bond, 10% cash or surety, which Stehura posted. At a preliminary hearing on April 17, the case was bound over to the grand jury.
