Chase suspects ID’d, bond set

POLAND — Two suspects in a car chase that started in Struthers and ended in Poland Township were in court for their arraignment Wednesday and remain jailed.

Deandre Smith, 19, of 2305 Jackson St. SW, Warren, and Larry Smith III, 18, no listed address, who are cousins, were in Struthers Municipal Court to answer to charges. Deandre Smith is facing charges of carrying a concealed weapon, failure to comply and six traffic offenses; Larry Smith is facing a charge of carrying a concealed weapon, court records show.

According to a police report, Struthers police saw a white Mazda in the parking lot of Sami Quick Stop, 2115 Midlothian Blvd., at 6:47 p.m. Tuesday and noted the two occupants were behaving strangely. Police ran the vehicle’s registration and the owner did not have a valid driver’s license.

The report states the driver initially was “not excessive or erratic,” but ran two red lights and then began passing vehicles and speeding up. When the vehicle got near Hummingbird Trail, the car crashed into a guardrail. Both the driver and the passenger were able to get out and police saw each of them holding a firearm, the report states.

The two men started running in different directions and the driver was stopped by police at Taser point. The report states Deandre Smith was the driver.

Larry Smith, however, was running toward the Poland High School football field where a soccer game was taking place. The game was locked down and the spectators were made aware “there was a potential gunman on the loose, which induced panic throughout the entire stadium,” the report states. He eventually was stopped near the Poland Township Municipal Building.

Jail records show Larry Smith’s bond was set at $100,000 and Deandre Smith’s bond is $125,000. They were in the Mahoning County jail late Wednesday.
