Driver accused of OVI, fleeing

AUSTINTOWN — A township man accused of operating a vehicle under the influence, a felony, was arrested by Austintown police following a crash.

David Black, 61, of 1075 Ohltown Road, is in Mahoning County jail following Thursday’s incident. The report states Black has two prior felony OVI convictions and another 14 other misdemeanor OVI convictions as well.

According to a police report, officers were called to Silica and Ohltown roads Thursday night for a hit-skip involving a silver Chevrolet Silverado. The report states the truck rear-ended another vehicle.

The driver of the truck, later identified as Black, fled. The driver of the other vehicle provided a license plate number, and officers went to the residence associated with the plate.

The registered owner of the vehicle is a male relative of Black, who was not home. When police arrived at Black’s residence, they found the vehicle and determined it to be the one involved in the crash. The report states the vehicle was loaned to Black the day before.

At the residence, a woman told police Black was inside intoxicated and asleep, and she let police inside. After waking up, Black denied driving the vehicle or being in an accident. He told police he stopped drinking around noon, but police smelled alcohol on his breath, the report notes. The woman said Black returned home about 45 minutes before police arrived.

Police asked Black to perform a field sobriety test — and Black then fell forward into police. The report states he failed the test.

Police determined Black was involved and arrested him. When they arrived to the police department, Black refused a breath test and requested an attorney.

Black will appear 1 p.m. Monday in Mahoning County Court 4. He is being held in jail on $9,250 bond, jail records show.
