Mahoning has 13.6 percent of state’s nursing-home staff cases

The number of COVID-19 cases in Mahoning County nursing homes and assisted-living facilities dropped a little this week — from 32 to 30 at 17 facilitites.

Also dropping were cases at the Ohio Reformatory for Women in Marysville.

Trumbull and Columbiana county nursing homes and assisted-living facilities continued to have no virus cases.

The Ohio Reformatory for Women northwest of Columbus had no inmate cases two weeks ago but had 34 last week and is down to 20 this week, according to new data from the Ohio Department of Health. All of the cases are among inmates. No staff have the virus.

The number of prisoners with the virus across the state prison system dropped this week from 53 to 29, and staff cases dropped from 27 to 22.

Locally, the private Northeast Ohio Correctional Center in Youngstown saw an increase of staff cases, rising from two last week to four this week. The facility continues to have no inmate cases.

The Ohio State Penitentiary in Youngstown saw a decline in number of staff with the virus, dropping from two to one. Its inmate cases rose from two to four.

The Trumbull Correctional Institution in Leavittsburg saw a decline in staff cases from two to one. Inmate cases remained at zero.

There was a drop in the number of staff members at nursing homes and assisted-living facilities across the state this week, falling from 181 last week to 162 this week. The number of patient cases rose from 143 to 145.

Mahoning County’s 22 staff cases this week make up 13.6 percent of the total staff cases in Ohio, despite Mahoning County’s 228,683 population making up 1.96 percent of Ohio’s 11,689,442 population. Mahoning County had 17 facilities with at least one case this week, one more facility than last week.

The number of Mahoning County facilities with at least three combined cases among patients and staff dropped from four to three this week.

The number of COVID-19 deaths at area nursing homes and assisted-living facilities remained the same this week — Mahoning had 276, Trumbull had 153 and Columbiana had 79.

• Austintown Heathcare Center nursing home, 2 patient cases, 2 staff cases, total of 76 patient cases, 38 staff cases.

• Dandridge Burgundy Manor nursing home in Youngstown, 3 patient cases, 2 staff cases, total of 45 patient cases, 20 staff cases.

• Shepherd of the Valley Boardman nursing home, 1 patient case, 2 staff cases; total of 40 patient cases, 25 staff cases.
