Fewest weekly cases posted in 8 months

With those fully vaccinated against COVID-19 no longer required in Ohio to wear face masks and virtually all health orders related to the pandemic being lifted June 2, this past week had the fewest reported cases in the state in nearly eight months.

There were 7,461 cases reported last week, an average of slightly fewer than 1,066 per day.

It was also the fourth-straight week with a reduction in reported COVID-19 cases in the state.

The prior week with 8,796 cases was the lowest for a week since Sept. 27 to Oct. 3, when 7,957 cases were reported.

This past week had the fewest new COVID-19 cases since 6,462 cases were reported during the week of Sept. 20 to 26.

Not including the past two weeks, every other week since Oct. 4 to 10 had cases that exceeded 10,000.

Also, several days in November, December and January had more cases than the state had during the past week combined.

The 100 COVID-19 deaths reported last week was the fewest in the state since the week of Oct. 25 to 31 with 95 deaths.

Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties had no reported COVID-19 deaths this past week for the first time since the early days of the pandemic in March 2020.

Gov. Mike DeWine announced Friday those who are fully vaccinated no longer have to wear face masks except when in a health care setting, traveling on public transportation, including airplanes, and when they are in a business or their place of work that chooses to require them.

Two days earlier, DeWine said he was lifting all health orders related to the virus, except those for nursing homes and assisted-living facilities, June 2, although businesses had the authority to require them.
