Boardman narrows schools chief search to 2

Superintendents in Struthers, East Palestine are finalists

BOARDMAN — The Boardman Local School District’s search for a new superintendent has been narrowed down to two candidates.

According to a news release from the district, current East Palestine City Schools Superintendent Chris Neifer and current Struthers City Schools Superintendent Peter Pirone are the two finalists.

“Both Neifer and Pirone bring with them extensive experience and commendable references, reflecting their dedication and expertise in educational leadership,” the release stated. “The board expresses gratitude for the participation of all applicants and acknowledges the rigorous vetting process thus far. As the selection process advances, the board remains committed to securing the best fit for the Boardman Local Schools community.”

At Monday’s school board meeting, board President John Fryda said that school officials had received 11 applications and of those 11 candidates, four finalists remained. However, no date has been established for hiring the next superintendent.

Timothy Saxton, who replaced Frank Lazzeri as superintendent in 2015, is set to retire July 31.

In its release, Boardman Local Schools stated “The board will continue its efforts to thoroughly vet both candidates to ensure a thoughtful and informed decision in appointing the next superintendent. The Spartan community and media will be notified promptly when the final decision is made, underscoring the board’s commitment to transparency and community involvement in this crucial decision.”
