Girl, 13, shot in drive-by

Teen stable after being hit in leg while in her bed

YOUNGSTOWN — A girl, 13, was shot in the lower leg while in her bed at 2 a.m. Wednesday in a drive-by shooting at her home in the 800 block of East Avondale Avenue on the South Side.

The girl is in stable condition at a local hospital and is expected to be OK, Youngstown police Chief Carl Davis said.

Jana M. Cox, 25, who had an address in Warren in 2016, according to unrelated Mahoning County court records, was charged with felonious assault and shooting into a habitation Wednesday afternoon and is in the Mahoning County jail.

Youngstown Law Director Jeff Limbian, who filed the charges, provided her name. She is likely to be arraigned today in Youngstown Municipal Court.

Youngstown police said they also arrested two male juveniles and took them to the Mahoning County Juvenile Justice Center. Their names and ages have not been released.

Youngstown police said after being alerted to the shooting, an officer observed a white vehicle matching the description of the vehicle involved leaving the area. That vehicle was traffic stopped at Interstate 680 and South Avenue.

The officer was nearby when the shooting took place, Davis said.

Inside the car were two juvenile males and a woman who were questioned at the Youngstown Police Department and taken to the jail and JJC.

Davis spoke at an event Wednesday at which he mentioned the three had been apprehended and the adult had been charged.

He said the victim was “at home in her bed when she was struck by a bullet from the gunfire that struck the home.”

Davis added: “This has to stop and it will stop.”

He said police suspect the people involved are “responsible for numerous shootings in the city.”
