Boardman woman pleads guilty

Possessed cocaine, obstructed official business at motel

YOUNGSTOWN — Sarah K. Kamal, 21, of South Schenley Avenue in Boardman, pleaded guilty Thursday to cocaine possession and obstructing official business after police found cocaine in a safe in her room at a Boardman motel last June.

Prosecutors and Kamal’s attorney jointly recommended that Kamal get a three-year prison sentence with prosecutors not objecting to Judge John Durkin of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court granting judicial release to Kamal after she serves part of her sentence.

Kamal was charged after Boardman police were checking license plates on vehicles in the township looking for individuals with warrants for their arrest.

Police discovered a warrant out of Boardman for Kamal’s arrest. A man with her in the motel also had a warrant. Police went to their room and were taking Kamal into custody when she asked if she could remove items from the safe in the room.

When she opened the safe, officers smelled marijuana, then found marijuana, cocaine and cash in the safe, and Kamal told police everything in the safe was hers.
