YOUNGSTOWN — The Paul and Yetta Gluck School of Visual Arts at the Jewish Community Center of Youngstown has added a kiln to its studio.

“Our kiln falls in the medium category in terms of what we can do and is suited for small scale beginner / intermediate processes,” Dana Goodfriend, JCC art and education curator, said.

The kiln’s capabilities will allow school of visual arts participants to work with glass as well as stoneware, medium porcelain and low-fire earthenware clays. They also will be able to use precious metal clay that contains powder of silver and gold.

“That’s good for jewelry making,” Goodfriend said.

They will be able to work with several glazes including mason stains and glaze, colored slip decoration and underglaze over carved lines.

“Glaze colors we can achieve should be a full spectrum of the rainbow,” Goodfriend said.

Participants will use hand-building techniques such as slab construction, coil construction and pinching.

“These are suitable for jewelry and small objects that are sculptural or functional,” Goodfriend said.
