Mahoning County continues to have the most active cases of COVID-19 in nursing homes and other long-term care facilities in the the Mahoning Valley, but the number of facilities with three or more combined patient and staff cases remains low.

Only Woodlands Center for Rehab in Poland has that many. Last week, there were four facilities with that many cases.

Mahoning County facilities have 42 total cases this week, spread out among 27 different facilities — 10 of those being patient cases and 32 being staff cases, according to data from the Ohio Department of Health.

There were only three cases altogether in Trumbull County facilities this week, two among patients, one among staff. The two patient cases were at White Oak Manor nursing home in Warren and Windsor Armstrong Memory Assisted Living in Champion. The one staff case was at Community Skilled Nursing Home in Warren.

There also were three cases among Columbiana County long-term care facilies such as nursing homes — two among patients at Salem West Nursing Home and one among staff at Circle of Care Nursing Home in Salem.

Statewide, there were 992 patient cases of the virus in nursing homes this week, down from 1,176 last week. There were 705 staff cases this week, down from 852 last week.

The number of nursing home deaths reported this week among Mahoning Valley long-term care facilities jumped, apparently because of corrections to the data that the Ohio Department of Health reported earlier among COVID-19 deaths among all Ohioans.

The ODH reported 2,559 additional COVID-19 deaths last Friday, including about 2,500 that primarily occurred between November and December, but also included October.

Mahoning County’s number of COVID-19 nursing home deaths rose from 215 last week to 275 this week.

Trumbull County’s total rose from 159 to 168, and Columbiana County’s total rose from 68 to 73.

Staff cases of the virus at the private Northeast Ohio Correctional Center in Youngstown remained at nine this week, but the number of inmate cases dropped from two to one. There had been a big decline in staff cases last week, dropping from 19 to nine.

Meanwhile, the number of staff cases at the Ohio State Penitentiary in Youngstown dropped from six to one. The number of inmate cases remained at zero.

There was no change in the numbers at the Trumbull Correctional Institution in Leavittsburg, remaining at two staff cases and zero inmate cases.
