Trumbull Town Hall scraps rest of this season

WARREN — Trumbull Town Hall subscribers will have to wait another six months for the lecture series to resume.

The group is scrapping plans to do two lectures each in March, April and May and instead is announcing its 44th season, which includes one speaker originally planned for last season and a returning favorite.

Program chairwoman E. Carol Maxwell said the board decided last month not to go forward this spring. Packard Music Hall’s capacity was limited to about 300 people, due to the state guidelines enacted for the COVID-19 pandemic, and its lectures traditionally draw about twice that many people.

“How do you tell somebody they can’t come?” Maxwell said.

Even with Gov. Mike DeWine loosening those restrictions on Thursday, the capacity still would be limited to about 525 people, Maxwell said. Considering the age of many of its subscribers, the board decided it would be better to wait until the vaccines for the virus are more available before resuming.

Linda Evans, originally scheduled to open the 43rd season last September, now will open the 44th season on Sept. 15. The Golden Globe-winning actor, best known for her roles on “Dynasty” and “The Big Valley,” will speak on aging gracefully.

The political musical comedy troupe The Capitol Steps decided to retire during the pandemic shutdown. TTH will try to reschedule the other two speakers from last season — author Maxwell King on “The Good Neighbor: The Life and Work of Fred Rogers” and Louis Masur on “Hamilton vs. Jefferson: The Rivalry That Shaped America” — as part of its 45th season.

“We didn’t want to cancel anyone we had booked,” Maxwell said.

Other speakers for the 44th season include political humorist Jimmy Tingle, who was a regular contributor on “60 Minutes II” and MSNBC, on Nov. 3; Caroline Winterer, a historian and author who will speak on “The Remarkable Genius of Benjamin Franklin,” on March 16, 2022; and Steve Hartman, a CBS News correspondent who does the network’s “On the Road” segments, on April 20, 2022.

It’s a return appearance for Hartman, who opened the 2017-18 season.

For those who purchased tickets last season, the money automatically will be applied to the upcoming season, Maxwell said. Letters will be mailed to all current subscribers with complete details.

Trumbull Town Hall also is rescheduling the two final lectures from its 2019-20 season.

New Yorker cartoonist Tom Toro now will speak on Sept. 29 and actor, producer and author Chris Lemmon (son of multiple Oscar winner Jack Lemmon) will speak on Nov. 17. Tickets already purchased will be honored for the new dates.
