YSU police investigate armed robbery

YOUNGSTOWN — No arrests have been made in robbery and carjacking of a Youngstown State University Cafaro House resident who was approached by two males at about 11:58 p.m. Saturday.

The student was getting out of his 2008 Saturn when the two men approached, with one holding a gun. They demanded the student’s car keys and personal items.

The student gave the robbers his car keys and his cell phone, according to YSU Police Chief Shawn Varso.

The suspects were identified in the report as black, between 5 foot 9 inches and 5 foot 10 inches tall. The taller of the two men had the black and silver pistol and pointed the weapon at the student.

No one was injured.

Varso described the M90 parking lot across from Cafaro House as well lit.

The two men then fled south on Elm Street toward the Eastbound Service Road away from campus.

There is video surveillance around the area, so the department may have images of the robbery, the chief said.

Varso said it has been rare that an armed robbery has happened on the campus. Typically these crimes have happened off the campus property.

“Students should be careful and watch their surroundings,” Varso said. “Students who feel uncomfortable on campus may call for an escort. It is better to err on the side of caution.”

Anyone with information about the robbery should contact YSU police at 330-941-3527.

YSU police alerted students on Sunday that two people escaped from Mahoning County Juvenile Justice Center.

“We don’t know if they actually were on campus, but because the JJC is next to campus, we wanted to make students aware what was occurring,” Varso said.
