Virus cases spike at nursing homes in Columbiana County

Columbiana County is the new hot spot for coronavirus cases in Mahoning Valley nursing homes and assisted-living facilities.

The county now has five facilities with three or more cases among patients or staff — all of them in Salem and Columbiana.

The county had only two facilities with at least three cases last week.

Windsor House at Parkside nursing home in Columbiana joined the list for the first time since at least April 15 with 19 patient cases and 18 staff cases.

In all of Trumbull and Mahoning counties, meanwhile, only two facilities have at least three patient cases or staff cases after having five such facilities last week.

Caprice Healthcare nursing home in North Lima, which had 22 patient cases and zero staff cases last week, now has no cases in either category, according to Ohio Department of Health data released Wednesday on its website.

As a state, the number of patient cases this week in Ohio nursing homes and assisted-living facilities fell — from 958 to 836. Staff cases also fell — from 602 to 570.

Mahoning County reported an increase of one nursing home death this week — to 179.

Trumbull County saw an increase of four nursing home deaths this week — to 72. Columbiana County saw an increase of two nursing home deaths — to 37 this week.

Mahoning County continued to have the fourth-highest number of nursing home deaths, and Trumbull continued to have the eighth most.

Trumbull Correctional Institution in Leavittsburg saw a small increase this week in COVID-19 cases among inmates, rising from four to six. The Northeast Ohio Correctional Center on Hubbard Road in Youngstown stayed at one inmate case this week.

Allen-Oakwood Correctional Institution in Lima continues to have the most inmate cases of the virus in Ohio prisons at 83, up from 79 last week.
