Trumbull and Mahoning counties saw smaller increases in coronavirus cases this week than last week — 45 for Mahoning and 34 for Trumbull. The previous week, the numbers increased by 102 for Mahoning and 59 for Trumbull.

The change was about the same for Columbiana County. Its increase in cases was 52 this week, compared to 51 last week.

Mahoning County reported 2,888 cases as of Saturday, an increase of nine since Friday, according to numbers provided by the Ohio Department of Health. Trumbull County had 1,777 cases Saturday, an increase of five cases overnight. Neither county reported a new COVID-19 death.

Columbiana County reported 1,866 cases on Saturday, a decrease of six cases since Friday. No explanation for the decrease was given, but state officials said previously that sometimes a case is ruled COVID-19 and is later determined to be to be something else, or there were some false-postive results. Two new deaths were reported in Columbiana.

Across the state, 129,785 cases of the virus were recorded Saturday, an increase of 1,216 since Friday and an increase of 8,294 since Aug. 29, the ODH reported. That is an average increase of 1,185 cases per day.

The state reported 4,256 deaths on Saturday, a bump of eight since Friday and 130 since last week. According to the ODH, 107,972 people are presumed recovered from the virus.

Mahoning County is ninth in the state for the number of cases, but fifth in the number of deaths. Trumbull is 16th in the state for cases and ninth for its death count, while Columbiana County is 14th in the state for case numbers and 12th for fatalities.
