Last week, Ohio surpassed its previous record of new cases per week by more than 1,300 — and on Saturday the state reported the third highest instance of new cases in a single day thus far.

Saturday saw 1,358 new cases statewide — bringing the total for the week to 8,031. The previous record was last week with 6,728 new cases, meaning this week surpassed it by 1,303 cases.

Friday broke the single-day record for the state with 1,525 reported cases. The previous high was 1,380 on April 19. Saturday now has the third-most reported cases, bumping the 1,317 cases reported April 20 to fourth-most. The fifth-most is 1,301 on July 2.

Testing has recently increased for the general population, contributing to the increased number of positive cases. However, Gov. Mike DeWine has said a more significant factor is community spread of the virus at gatherings such as parties and funerals.

Despite the continued high daily case count, the state reported just four new deaths from the virus Saturday, for a total of 3,036. There have been 8,770 hospitalizations attributed to the virus statewide.

Locally, there were 11 new cases and three new hospitalizations reported in Mahoning County on Saturday, but no new deaths. Of the county’s total 1,928 cases, 1,450 are presumed recovered — a number that represents people whose symptoms appeared more than 21 days ago and are not deceased.

In Trumbull County, state numbers from the Ohio Department of Health show 1,045 confirmed cases and 78 deaths as of Saturday, though the county reports 1,061 cases and 80 deaths, showing an apparent disconnect between local and state data. No new deaths were reported Saturday.

The Department of Health has previously said that it is common for reported deaths and cases to lag behind actual ones because of delays in reporting data by local health districts, as well as the time it takes to file COVID-19 death certificates and determining if the virus was the reason for the fatality / illness.

Trumbull County is one of 12 counties in the state listed as level 3 (red) that requires residents to wear a mask in all indoor areas that are not private residences and outdoor areas where it is not possible to maintain a 6-foot distance from others.

A Saturday release from Trumbull County Health Commissioner Frank Migliozzi lists 57 people in the county who are in quarantine and being monitored by the health department. Of those people, 32 are in Warren.

Across the county, 726 people have completed quarantine and have been released. Of those, 239 were in Warren.

Migliozzi encourages everyone in the county to limit daily activities, avoid mass gatherings and social distance, as well as wear the state-mandated masks. Masks are also required when waiting for or riding public transportation, such as buses, taxis, and ride share services not provided by a family member.
