Ohio posts 2nd-highest daily case total

The state reported 1,560 new COVID-19 cases Friday, the second-highest daily number since the start of the pandemic.

Friday was the 17th-straight day with at least 1,000 newly reported cases. All 17 are in the top 22 days for the most reported COVID-19 cases in Ohio.

The 7,924 cases during the first six days of the week average to 1,321 per day. That is down from the 1,372 daily average last week when the state reported the most cases in a week with 9,608.

It would take a record 1,684 cases today to tie last week’s number. But it’s only 108 cases away from breaking the second-highest week for cases of 8,031 during the week of July 5.

The state reported 81,746 overall COVID cases as of Friday with 56,823 “presumed recovered” and 3,297 fatalities.

COVID-19 deaths in Mahoning and Columbiana counties were adjusted down during this week with Mahoning then going up.

Meanwhile, Trumbull County had one of its deadliest weeks for the virus, but the Ohio Department of Health and the county combined health district have conflicting numbers.

ODH reported 244 overall fatalities Friday in Mahoning County, up three from Thursday. This happened a day after ODH took away six COVID-19 fatalities because, according to the county health district, the state incorrectly was assigning them to Mahoning when they occurred in other counties.

According to ODH, 94 overall COVID-19 fatalities were recorded in Trumbull, including three Friday. But the county combined health district is reporting 91 COVID-19 fatalities.

ODH revised its Columbiana County fatality number to 60, after previously reporting it was 62.

A Columbiana County Health District spokeswoman said: “We are still wrestling with our confirmed COVID-19 death totals. There have been cases where the patient had two addresses in two different counties and other data errors that we have been working through.”

Using ODH figures, the Valley reported 14 deaths this week, not including today, with 10 in Trumbull and four in Mahoning.

The Valley had six COVID-19 deaths last week, the lowest since before March 29.

The week prior had 19 deaths, while 14 were reported the week of June 28.

The most reported deaths, 53, occurred during the week of May 3.

Oftentimes, reported cases and deaths often lag behind actual deaths.

Mahoning listed 2,214 total cases Friday, an increase of 26 from Thursday.

Trumbull reported 1,265 cases Friday, an increase of 23 from Thursday.

Columbiana recorded 1,497 cases Friday, an increase of 16 from Thursday.

The Mahoning County Public Health District established a hotline for people to report businesses violating the state face covering order in the county. The number is 330-270-2858.
