BLESSING OF THE BIKES: Ohltown United Methodist Church,. 2001 Ohltown Road, Mineral Ridge, will host a Blessing of the Bikes from 1-3 p.m. Saturday. Those attending are asked to bring a nonperishable food item to help the Mineral Ridge food pantry and will receive refreshments.

HONORING PASTOR: Hoyt Street Flourishing Ministries, 789 Hoyt St. SW, Warren, will honor Dr. Vivian F. Morgan at 4 p.m. Sunday for her work at the church. Guest speaker is Shelby Frederick. Interim pastor is Bishop Edwin Tyrone Cook of the Ohio Northeast First Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction.

MONASTERY’S 80 YEARS: The St. Paul Monastery / Society of St. Paul in Canfield will mark its 80th anniversary Saturday and Sunday with an 11 a.m. Mass Saturday with Bishop David Bonnar of the Diocese of Youngstown, and the Rev. Gabriel Rendon, the provincial superior of the Mexico, Cuba, USA Provence. On Sunday after 10 a.m. Mass, there will be a blessing outside where there are plans for a rosary garden next to St. Paul Books and Gifts.

SOPRANO PERFORMANCE: Grace Lutheran Church, 162 S. Raccoon Road, Austintown, will host a community concert at 4 p.m. Sunday featuring music director Brianne Samson, Amanda Beagle, Eve McPherson and Laurie Jones on piano. They will perform opera arias, Broadway classics, Celtic hymns and movie soundtracks. A free-will offering will be collected for the musicians.

FIRST FRIDAY: The First Friday Club of Greater Youngstown continues its 18th season with a luncheon June 6 featuring Dr. Brenna Moore, a specialist in modern Christianity with a focus on Catholic intellectual and cultural history in Europe.

She is particularly interested in questions concerning women, gender and religion; mysticism and spirituality; a movement in theology known as Ressourcement; and the various Catholic responses to modernity. She is most recently the author of “Kindred Spirits: Friendship and Resistance at the Edges of Modern Catholicism” and winner of the John Gilmary Shea Book Prize from the American Catholic Historical Association.

Moore is a professor at Fordham University, where she teaches introductory courses in theology, seminars for majors and graduate courses.

Her topic will be “Spiritual Friendship and a Forgotten Catholic History: Insights for Today” at Avion on the Water Banquet Center, 2177 W. Western Reserve Road in Canfield. There will be an opportunity for participants’ questions following the talk. Luncheon will be served at 11:30 a.m. with the presentation beginning at noon. The cost is $20. DIVINE MERCY PRAYER: The Diocese of Youngstown will offer the Chaplet of Divine Mercy Prayer Service at 3 p.m. every Friday at alternating locations. First Friday is at Calvary Cemetery Chapel in Youngstown, second Friday is at Resurrection Cemetery Chapel in Austintown and third Friday is at All Souls Cemetery Chapel in Bazetta.

CHOIR PERFORMS: Simple Gifts Choir will present “Just Praise” at 4 p.m. Sunday at Hubbard Presbyterian Church, 22 Westview Ave. The hourlong program will feature the 55-voice choir singing Christian praise anthems. A free-will offering will benefit Presbyterian Disaster Assistance in Israel and Palestine. Admission is free.

GUEST SPEAKER: Council 4471 of Christ Our Savior Knights of Columbus welcomed Anne Kravitz from the Youngstown Diocese St. Vincent de Paul Society to its May 6 meeting. Kravitz spoke about the work the society does through the diocese as well as the new SVDP Thrift Store, which will be opening shortly in the old JoAnn Fabrics building on Market Street across from the Southern Park Mall in Boardman. The St. Vincent de Paul Society feeds about 50,000 people a year averaging close to, if not over, 500 weekly lunches a week. Volunteers from various parishes, societies and organizations help with these luncheons by serving up the hot meals.

FEAST OF PENTECOST: St. Joseph Church in Austintown will mark the Feast of Pentecost with the bell choir performance at 9 a.m. and the combined chorus at 11 a.m. Mass at Immaculate Heart of Mary.

COFFEE AND CONTEMPLATION: Villa Maria Education and Spirituality Center will offer Coffee and Contemplation 10 a.m. Tuesday in Begel Hall. Eilis McCulloh, HM, will present this month’s session in person and via Zoom: Contemplatives in Action. This series focuses on a variety of spiritual and holistic topics. The program provides participants with input from a presenter and includes time for reflection and discussion. Cost is $10. RETREAT PLANNED: Villa Maria Education and Spirituality Center will offer a conference retreat with Kathleen Duffy, SSJ, PhD, titled “Teilhard’s Cosmic Images Of God.” This retreat will take place from 7 p.m. June 9 to noon June 13 at the center on Evergreen Road. Today, when so much of the evolutionary process is being explained from a materialist view, one of the most challenging questions for believers is how to envision the role of the Divine in the ongoing creation. SCOUT AWARD: Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and Scouting leaders from the Diocese of Youngstown gathered to celebrate the earning of their Catholic religious awards. Seven Scouts, having completed months of one-on-one sessions plus an all-day retreat, received their BSA-Catholic religious awards: the Ad Altare Dei and Pope Pius XII. Joining the Scouts were adult leaders who received their Diocesan awards: the Bronze Pelican and St. George. The Diocese of Youngstown works with the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts so they may earn their Catholic awards. Locally, the chairman for the Catholic Committee on Scouting is Bob Granchie.

SHROUD OF TURIN: Villa Maria Education and Spirituality Center, 225 Villa Marie Road, will offer a Zoom presentation with Barrie Schwortz on the Shroud of Turin at 6 p.m. May 16 at the Conference Center. The Shroud of Turin is a centuries-old linen that bears the image of a crucified man, believed to be Jesus. The program is being sponsored by the William J. Duca Educational Fund with the Zoom link available on the center’s website. The program is free, but donations will be accepted. FOOD COLLECTION: St. Columba Cathedral in Youngstown will collect nonperishable food items to support the needs of its parish community and those at St. Edward Parish, also in Youngstown, this weekend. Donation bins will be located at the back and front entrances of the church. Anyone wanting to make a cash donation or donate a gift card to local grocery stores can place their donation in an envelope marked “food donation” and put it in the collection basket. The collection will take place the first weekend of every month.

FIRST SUNDAY: First Presbyterian Church in Warren will have Gerald Wolfe, HIV prevention coordinator at the Warren City Health Department, as guest speaker at 11:15 a.m. Sunday. Wolfe has been involved with the HIV / STI and the Risk Reduction community for over 12 years, primarily in outreach, advocacy, education and as a certified Ohio HIV/HCV counselor.

FAITH LEARNING: The Office of Faith Formation and Lay Ecclesial Ministry of the Catholic Diocese of Youngstown is offering new online and in-person opportunities for adults seeking to learn more or deepen their understanding of topics in faith and Catholic Church practice.

Courses beginning Monday include “Faith, Hope, and Love: The Seven Catholic Epistles,” led by Al Pompeo. Other online courses May through September include “Preparing Hearts and Minds,” led by Margie Hynes; “My Teachers Were Saints,” led by Eileen Edwards; “Adolescent Catechesis,” led by Bob Barto; “Catholic Belief and Tradition,” led by Sister Regina Rogers; and “Catholics Engaging with Social Media,” led by Cindee Case.

Beginning June 4 “Adolescent Catechesis” will be held in person from 6 to 8 p.m. at Christ Our Savior Parish led by Jerry Land. Materials are provided and assignments are posted at the beginning of a given week, and participants have the week to respond, until the following week’s learning is posted.

GUIDED LABYRINTH: Villa Maria Education and Spirituality Center, 225 Villa Marie Road, will offer a guided labyrinth walk 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday. This month’s theme is peace. The labyrinth is a tool that allows people to explore their inner space and discover the sacred within and around us. Participants prayerfully walk the outdoor grass path after receiving thematic instructions from the presenter. The walk takes place on the picturesque grounds of Villa Maria Community Center. Guided labyrinth walks are free, but registration is preferred.
